Smoking pot causes the munchies – so it must lead to weight gain, right? Not necessarily, according to a study published in The American Journal of Medicine.

The research finds an intriguing connection between marijuana use and body weight, showing that the rates of obesity are lower by roughly a third in people who smoke pot at least three times a week, compared with those who don’t use marijuana at all.

Yes, getting into summer shape never was so easy! Now you have one more good reason to smoke weed: it helps you shed some pounds.

This scientific study included 52,000 participants from the US, and it showed that about 22 percent of those who never smoked weed were obese while only 14 percent of marijuana users are within normal weight range.

Current marijuana users had significantly smaller waist circumference than participants who had never used, even after adjusting for factors like age, sex, tobacco and alcohol use, and physical activity levels.

They did find that pot-smokers had healthier HDL (the good type of cholesterol) and insulin levels. Since insulin helps regulate body weight, they theorize that this is part of what’s going on with these results.

As you can see, marijuana researches never lack for surprises! So, it’s time to start you new meal plan and add some… weed!
